American Girl Dolls

American Girl Dolls

January 29  |  3 minute read

This August, our friends from American Girl in Tysons generously donated a couple dozen dolls and activity books for our children and their siblings. The gift provided a sweet opportunity to bring contagious joy and huge smiles to these girls. They enthusiastically welcomed their new dolls with open arms, like welcoming a new friend into their hearts.

One of our moms shared how her daughter, “…has been putting band-aids on her [doll], taking [her] temperature, putting headbands [on her], etc. [She] plays doctor which helps soothe her and feel someone else is experiencing what she is going through. Thanks again to you and American Girl.”

We deeply appreciate American Girl for sharing their dolls with our families and reminding all of us here at Jill’s House how something as simple as a doll can comfort a child in significant ways.

Rocky Top Launch

Rocky Top Launch

January 29  |  3 minute read

Weekend Adventures just launched a new and exciting location in Nashville! Over the weekend of August 17th, Jill’s House Rocky Top hosted its first campers at the YMCA Camp Widjiwagan, right near Percy Priest Lake. Good weather allowed the campers to enjoy outdoor activities like ropes courses, hayrides, and bonfires, in a safe and cherishing environment.

Rocky Top is one of four Jill’s House Weekend Adventure programs in the country, offering children who have intellectual disabilities the opportunity to explore the great outdoors. Trained staff, including client care specialists (CCS), nurses, and volunteers, ensure the safety of the children and peace of mind for the parents. The children have the sleepaway camp experience and stay in cabins with their new friends, as a CCS remains awake and available throughout the night. Camp staff prepares the meals with specific dietary needs in mind, so the children are free to just be kids.

We are thrilled about Rocky Top and cannot wait for the many more adventures ahead!

Aug 2018 Single Moms Retreat

Aug 2018 Single Moms Retreat

January 29  |  3 minute read

A rainbow stretched across the sky in Middleburg, Virginia, as a reminder of hope and the promise of peace for the families gathered for Jill’s House’s second annual single-moms retreat. Meadowkirk at Delta Farm generously hosted our moms and all of their children, for a weekend of rest, renewal, and relationship.

After the relaxing weekend away, one of our moms shared, “Spending four days with my kids and other moms and families who ‘get it’ was food for our souls. Every part of this vacation was heaven-sent and thoroughly enjoyable.”

The four-day retreat included activities for both the moms and the kids, creating a community of support, understanding, and restoration. Facilitated discussion and quiet time allowed the moms to navigate their experiences and emotions alongside other women in similar situations. These hardworking and sacrificial moms had the opportunity to learn from financial planning experts, and even add beautiful, new pieces to their wardrobe thanks to the generosity of Kendra Scott and Cabi Clothing. The moms invested in themselves while their kids received 1:1 love and attention, playing games and having silly string parties with the Jill’s House volunteers.

Together, the moms and their children enjoyed the scenic outdoors at Meadowkirk with pool time, a hayride, and s’mores around the fire-pit. Volunteers graciously offered to clean these busy moms’ cars, demonstrating how a simple act of service can make a world of difference. We are grateful for our friends at Meadowkirk for welcoming our families into a nurturing space for quality time in community, offering them a chance to feel seen, understood, and valued.

General Dynamics Fall Festival

General Dynamics Fall Festival

January 29  |  3 minute read

It’s officially Fall! On Saturday, September 22, General Dynamics hosted their annual Fall Festival for employees and their families. As a generous partner of Jill’s House, General Dynamics graciously offered 100 tickets for 23 of our Jill’s House families to join in the fall festivities! Activities included: a farmer’s market with bags of free goodies to take home, a character pancake making station, kite building and flying, a petting zoo complete with a friendly llama and fuzzy bunnies, a delicious tented buffet, face painting, live music, pony rides, and so much more.

One mom said, We went from section to section, and my girls just radiated happiness, just so much laughter and excitement. Every detail seemed to be thought of, it was a wonderful kick off and celebration of fall.”

Our families were so overjoyed and grateful to have the opportunity to see their children enjoying a variety of fun, sensory-friendly activities! The caring staff facilitating the activities throughout the day made sure to create a safe and encouraging environment, so each child felt included.

Another parent said, “Our time at the fall festival was an amazing time for our family to enjoy an activity that worked for both of our boys…and that can be hard to find. General Dynamics made us feel so special and created an environment where we felt welcomed and celebrated.”

From the glowing faces, laughter, and raving reviews, the Fall Festival was a huge success for Jill’s House families. Special thanks to General Dynamics for caring for our families so well!
